A Blackberry That Does Mobile Fingerprints

Screen Shot 2012-02-17 at 18.23.23

I happened to be watching a video from Essex Police now on YouTube about a mobile fingerprint device when ‘shock horror’ I saw that the device is incorporated with a BlackBerry. That got me super excited.

Officers on the beat can now try out an individual’s identity within two minutes thanks to a mobile fingerprinting device.
The gadgets, which were introduced in Essex in July 2011, allow officers to scan a person’s fingerprints and try out them against the national fingerprint database.
The devices were given to Essex Police by the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) and mean people can be identified much more quickly, saving the public and police officers time and making it hard for people to lie about who they really are.
Officers crosswise Essex, including those at Stansted Airport and the county’s ports, have been trained to use the devices.

When Will the Post-pc Era Arrive? It Just Did.

Scrabble on the iPadThere has been much debate about what the post-PC era is, when it will arrive, or whether it’s already here. But key pieces of new data, emerging last week, are making the case that we crossed the imaginary line from the “PC” era to the “post-PC” era at the end of 2011. According to analysts at Canalys, two major computing milestones were achieved at the end of this year: smartphone shipments outpaced PCs for the first time ever, and Apple became the world’s largest PC maker, if you count iPads as PCs (as well you should). Combined, what these numbers tell us is that the post-PC era is happening now. Right now. And maybe we need to reckon about how we define “PC.”

Quick Review: Gpspeedometer for Blackberry

appworld.blackberry.com

I’m a sucker for having a speedometer on whatever device I am using. I have one on my iPhone, Android and even my BlackBerry PlayBook that is dash mounted in the car. Just the other day I realized I didn’t have one on my BlackBerry Smartphone and that just wouldn’t do. What if i needed one in an emergency (snigger).

So I stumbled upon GPSpeedOMeter which has a free version as well as the paid. Free is excellent with me so I gave it a try and I have to say it is absolutely awesome!

There are many GPS speedometer apps to choose from on every platform. What I liked out this one was the fact that is is way more than just a speedo. There are other cool features that lie beneath the surface.

Microsoft, Nokia Considered Rim Takeover: Report

Microsoft and Nokia rumor has it that toyed with partnering up for a Research In Motion takeover.

That bit of news comes from The Wall Street Journal, itself quoting the ever-well loved “people familiar with the matter.” Those sources described the status of the talks as “doubtful.”

Given its age and prominence in the mobile industry, RIM nearly indeed has an immense library of patents, which could prove valuable to any Nokias and Microsofts in search of a small more intellectual-property safeguard in these litigious times. With RIM’s stock performance of late, the Canadian mobile device maker is arguably even more of a bargain than it was six months or two years ago, when similar acquisition rumors also surfaced.

But Microsoft has scored a number of significant legal victories against Android of late, between its campaign of cornering Android manufacturers into licensing agreements, and its minor win against Motorola Mobility with the ITC this week.

Any RIM deal would have come with significant drawbacks for both Microsoft and Nokia. For starters, both the latter companies are securely bonded to Windows Phone, and Microsoft is plotting (along with its manufacturing partners) a run of tablets with the imminent Windows 8. That sort of ecology doesn’t exactly merge seamlessly with RIM’s, which is in the middle of transitioning from BlackBerry 7 to QNX-based BlackBerry 10.

Nor could Microsoft and Nokia have made a play for RIM in order to secure the latter’s hardware, taking into account a.) Microsoft and manufacturing partners, and Nokia, already have their own hardware portfolios and proprietary design language, thank you very much, and b.) the majority of RIM’s portfolio is centered on devices with a physical QWERTY keyboard, which doesn’t exactly fit with Windows Phone.

Would Microsoft and Nokia have bought RIM for its corporate business and cloud air force? Again, Microsoft is already making its own fantastic strides in the business cloud, and has a significant business audience.

At most, Microsoft and Nokia were just performing their due diligence by sniffing around a small. Buying RIM wouldn’t be a excellent go.
